      using Concord Coach to San Jose and the canvas covered thoroughfare wagons the rest of the distance

1858     The Overland Mail Company took 24 days for the first Overland mail from St. Louis, MO to
      San Francisco. The route was published as 2700 miles, but the inaugural trip was actually
      2866 miles due to detours
1859     Leavenworth and Pikes Peak Express Stagecoach reach Denver (from Leavenworth to Riley,
     Kansas into Colorado, Cherry Creek) on 5/1/1859
1859     William H. Russell established the Pony Express. Worked out trail between St. Joseph,
     Missouri and Sacramento, California. They built stations at ten-mile intervals. Mail delivered
      within ten days. Sold in 1866 to Wells Fargo

1859     Wells & Fargo expanded operations north into Seattle
1860     The Pony Express makes its inaugural trip on 4/3/1860
1860     The courtship of Alex and Jane begins 9/1860
